Why we need your help

Children and young people are growing up in a complex world, but we believe citizenship education can help them navigate it.

By bringing politics, law, economics, media and more into the classroom, citizenship enriches the school curriculum. It gives young learners the knowledge, skills and motivation they need to be active in their communities and tackle society’s biggest issues.

But citizenship education is in trouble. There has never been more pressure on state school budgets and teaching staff, meaning this vital part of education is often neglected – and those in the poorest areas are even more likely to miss out.

We need your support to provide free, flexible and high-quality teaching resources to schools in the UK’s most deprived communities. Without them, vulnerable children and young people risk becoming misinformed, disengaged and disillusioned in our complex society.

Can you help provide teachers with tools to inform, inspire and empower their pupils?

“Young Citizens’ lessons plans offer a chance for our children to develop life skills such as debate, empathy, critical thinking and challenging prejudice. It gives them a voice in the community and wider world. The children never fail to surprise me with their maturity and balanced views in discussions.”

The difference you will make

Since 1989, millions of children and young people have benefitted from our work in schools, colleges and other education settings.

1 in 5 schools use our resource library each year, with hundreds more taking part in our immersive enrichment programmes, supporting over 6,000 teachers to deliver inspiring citizenship education to their pupils.

After taking part in our programmes, 3 in 4 young people say they have increased understanding of complex topics such as law, politics, media and economics, as well as feeling more able and confident to engage as active citizens.

Your donations can help us reach even more children and young people, especially in the UK’s most underserved areas. Set up your donation here.

“We had one pupil who is normally quiet and doesn’t tend to get that involved, but she really shone in the Young Citizens lesson. Her responses showed maturity and such deep thought – both myself and the other pupils were blown away! The primary resources library has been great for opening a new level of discussion.”
